This week's prompt is Sacrifice - one of the recurring themes in the Star Wars universe. One fill so far! Got any ideas you're working on? How is your week going?
I'm working on a pre-TFA Ben Solo/Poe Dameron fic that all of a sudden switched from a Poe POV to a Kes Dameron POV and works way better, incidentally. Excited about this prompt!
Tiny rant, though--I had a coupon for Target that was $10 off a $75 or more purchase of Star Wars merch. The pic in the ad looked to be a TFA Leia Funko bobble-head, which I didn't even know existed, and a limited edition FN-2187 Funko tee shirt (with the blood-smeared trooper helmet). Luckily, I found the tee shirt, so yay!
But they had no merch with any of the female characters, and I mean that. I bought a Leia Tsum-Tsum plush (with the New Hope styling), and they had one toy pack with an Ahsoka figure (I'm not an avid Clone Wars watcher, so I passed on that), but other than that, nothing. No Rey, no Phasma, no Leia, anywhere. And this isn't like they were wiped out of merch--pretty much everywhere you looked was SW merch. Boba Fett, Jabba, Poe (who I love, but I already have so much Poe merch), unnamed stormtroopers, Kylo Ren, they all had tons of toys, apparel, and accessories. But you would never know Rey was a character in the movie by seeing the merch.
Makes me a very flustered fangirl! The same thing happened when I was splurging on comic merch at Target a few weeks ago--especially regarding Marvel. If I wanted a cool Black Widow figure, I'd have to buy a huge $40 pack with the rest of the Avengers. Otherwise, she was nowhere to be seen.
Ohhhh man, the lack of female merch for Star Wars and Marvel is SO frustrating. Traditional-type Peggy Carter action figures (the non-Funko variety) don't even seem to EXIST, and I've yet to see an actual Rey in the wild. Come on, Disney, let me give you my money, please!
And it might just be nostalgia talking, but I'm sure there used to be more! I swear I used to be able to get Leia action figures in every outfit and hairstyle she ever had in the films.
I don't think it's just nostalgia! I remember lots of Leia figures being around in the '80s (as well as female action figures from the other shows that had female leads, like She-Ra).
I'm trying to figure out something happening from an OC Jedi viewpoint. So far a vague thing is sacrificing for one's survival.. Not sure how things will work out with that exactly.
I am trying really really hard to fill this one, it's such a good prompt. So far nothing has worked out, but I have hope!
Also to chime in on the lack of female representation in merch, this frustrates me constantly. I read something once where Disney doesn't feel it needs to market its superheroes, say, to girls, because they make enough on their princess stuff. Which is absolute BS when you consider the sheer magnitude of fangirls who are into sci-fi and heroes and stuff, but hey, what do I know? I'm just a weird girl :p
*ahem* I digress. Stuff like that sets me off sometimes.
I hope you are able to get something to work! :D (There's always amnesty, if not ...)
And yeah, re: the article you linked above - I've read that, and it's massively frustrating, all the more so because Disney owns so MANY big media properties now, so their merchandising policies have a huge across-the-board effect.
A few ideas that occurred to me when I came up with the prompt include: Jedi sacrificing their loves/friends/emotional well-being to pursue "proper" Jedi detachment; the unwilling "sacrifice" of Alderaan or the planet that Starkiller Base destroyed; an AU in which Anakin sacrifices himself for his children or Padme at a much earlier point in the timeline; Kylo Ren's sacrifice of his father and/or his own light-side emotions. Maybe one of those might spark something?
Well, there's always amnesty! Actually, since I've just realized I'm a day late and I was going to start an amnesty period next week anyway, I think I'll start it now. :D SO. GO FOR IT!
